The Finger Lakes Invitational is an off-season competition that began in 2004.

It was started as a precursor to the Finger Lakes Regional, both to attract potential sponsors, and, more importantly, to attract local schools.

In 2004, There were eight teams from Rochester competing. Team 211 seeded first, 191 seeded second, 340 seeded third, and 1405 seeded fourth. Team 211 picked 191 while team 340 chose 1405, eschewing 1126 who they were Regional Champions and Division Champions with. The 191 and 211 alliance had over 20 years of combined FIRST experience, whereas the 340 and 1405 alliance had only five. The finals consisted of a single match, which the 340 and 1405 alliance won 120 to 115, with all four robots hanging.
