FIRST culture

The FIRST subculture is based largely on the idea of gracious professionalism, extending from the more general FIRST philosophy. FIRSTers tend to be helpful to others, oftentimes significantly going out of their way to help other teams in need. Although there is a certain stereotype that FIRSTers tend to be geeks (interested and knowledgeable in technology, such as computers and, of course, robotics), many of the roles in a team are non-technical. There is a diverse flavor of people, however, so all cannot be classified together. Still, certain generalizations can be made.

The FIRST community is surprisingly tight knit for a group so widely spread across the country. Part of what makes this unity are uniquely FIRST inside jokes (see FIRST humor) and other traditions. It is not uncommon for FIRSTers to meet via ChiefDelphi or some other online communication and then arrange meetings at Regionals or in non-FIRST related activities.
