AutoCAD is computer aided drafting software used, often in conjunction with specialized additional software, in all disciplines of engineering. It is best suited for two-dimensional drafting and is, in most ways, inferior to newer, more powerful parametric drafting software. Regardless, it is still the most widely used CAD software and has a huge base of add-on software, plug-ins and experienced users.

CAD is very important to FIRST and teams thereof, because it gives them documentation of every part of their robot. It is also an easy way to create crude prototypes and decide which ones have the best chance of working. Members of FIRST that CAD the robots find themselves extremely knowledgeable about everything mechanical in a short amount of time, making it an invaluable learning tool.
